Not only does Justin Bieber have hit records, a documentary based on his fabulous life and a hot girlfriend at the tender age of 17, he can also claim to have the most viewed video online. The Guinness World Records, in honor of Social Media Day on June 30, released a listing of who has the most Facebook comments, Facebook likes, Twitter followers, most liked video online and most viewed video online.
Justin Bieber's "Baby" video, directed by Ray Kay from Norway, was released on February 19, 2010. Girls everywhere immediately gathered around their television sets to watch the video play repeatedly on MTV. Not satisfied with simply waiting around until it came on, they bombarded YouTube to watch him sing and dance his way to a young girl's heart.
According to The Guinness World Records, the video had 575,118,703 YouTube views as of June 29, 2011, making it not only the most viewed YouTube video but the most viewed video of all time across all channels. People who can't stand Bieber will take satisfaction in knowing that Bieber's "Baby" is the most disliked video on YouTube, with 1,490,076 "dislikes" as of June 29, 2011, but only because Rebecca Black's much derided "Friday" was pulled from the site because of a dispute with its record label.
So what makes Bieber's "Baby" so captivating and addicting? Even people well beyond his target audience admit to singing and dancing along with the video. It can't be denied that the song has a catchy beat and hook. Perhaps being constantly assaulted by pop stars who barely wear any clothes and perform as if they must shock audiences into disbelief makes the public crave for someone like Bieber, a performer who has still managed to maintain a clean-cut and wholesome image.
